Green Hell How to Get Rid of Worms

I am a writer with many interests and enjoy doing thorough research and learning new things.

The pinworm lifecycle

The pinworm lifecycle

What Are Pinworms (aka Butt Worms)?

If you've found thin, white worms in your stool or have extreme anal itching at night, you might have pinworms. Pinworms are human parasites that live in the intestine. They are small, white, and round, measuring between one-tenth of an inch to half an inch and live between two and eight weeks.

Symptoms

  • Itching around the anus sometimes accompanied by a feeling of something wriggling on the skin. Itching occurs mostly at night
  • Insomnia and restlessness due to itching
  • Presence of pinworms on the anus or in the stool
  • Vaginal discharge (rare)
  • In children—loss of appetite, weight loss, irritability, inability to control urination

Pinworm infections are extremely common. In fact, according to HealthLine, they're one of the most common types of human intestinal worm infection.1 It occurs when tiny worms infest the intestines and lay eggs around your anus.1

For women, pinworms can occasionally (but rarely) migrate from the anus to the vagina. Pinworm infection is common, striking people across all economic levels. It is estimated that at any given time some 10% of the U.S. population is infected with pinworms, and an even higher percent in other countries.

The worms are extremely contagious and normally, the people most susceptible to getting pinworms are children between five and ten years old, people who live in institutions, or those who interact with these groups on a regular basis.1

Getting an infection does not necessarily you're bad or gross. You probably just got unlucky.

How Do You Get Pinworms?

A person becomes infected with pinworms by ingesting pinworm eggs.1 This can happen after contact with a contaminated person, food, or surface area. The pinworm egg is translucent and so small that it is invisible to the human eye except when many are clumped together.

Once swallowed or inhaled, pinworm eggs hatch in the small intestine and travel to the large intestine where they mate. The male dies after mating and is passed through the bowels. The female becomes filled with eggs (between 11,000 and 16,000) and makes her way to the opening of the anus in order to get the oxygen she needs to complete reproduction. Her presence at the anal opening causes a severe itching experience for the infected person. After depositing her eggs at the anal opening, the female dies.

Once on the infected person's hands, the contamination can spread to toilet seats, bathroom fixtures, toys, clothing, and other people. Through contact with contaminated hands, surfaces, or food, the pinworm eggs enter a new human host and begins a new lifecycle. For this reason, thorough washing of hands, clothing, and surfaces are all important in treatment.

A pinworm infection can last indefinitely unless it is interrupted with drugs and strict hygiene. With proper treatment, however, some infections are cured in four weeks. Others may require up to a year to disappear.

Diagnosing Pinworms

According to HealthLine, the best way to check for pinworms is through something called the tape test,1 which is very simple. Simply take a piece of tape and stick it with the sticky side down on your anus or your child's anus first thing in the morning before bathing or using the restroom. If there are eggs present, some of them should stick to the tape, and you'll be able to take the tape in to the doctor for them to confirm a pinworm infection by looking at it through a microscope.

You can also check the toilet paper after wiping the anus to see if any adult pinworms are present, or examine your stool to check for the presence of pinworms.

How to Get Rid of Them

Getting rid of a pinworm infection, also called enterobiasis, can be daunting. There are many treatment approaches and this article summarizes the different options, which range from medication to strict personal and household hygiene practices.

Usually you can get rid of the infection using a combination of either over-the-counter or prescription medicine and rigorous personal hygiene. You don't necessarily need to see a doctor for this condition since it's possible to diagnose yourself and treat with over-the-counter medications.2

Since the worms are highly contagious, everyone in your household will need to be treated in order to prevent re-infections. If you have pets, there's no need to treat them since pinworms only seek human hosts.

Do You Need to See a Doctor?

Since pinworm medication can be purchased without a prescription, you do not technically need to see a doctor in order to treat an infection. However, it is possible that your anal itching is caused by something else besides pinworms.

If you find that the itch does not improve with treatment for a pinworm infection within a few weeks, you may want to see a doctor to determine what the problem could be.

Are There Natural Treatments?

Though not scientifically proven to treat pinworm infection, there are some natural treatments that are anecdotally said to help. Some of these are described below.

In general, practicing good hygiene can both help prevent a pinworm infection as well as keep the infection from recurring.

How to Get Rid of the Itch

Though pinworms are not a very dangerous infection, the itching that they cause can be extremely uncomfortable. You can soothe the itching by washing the area around the anus with warm water.3

If it's very severe, you can use a 1% hydrocortisone cream on the area twice a day for one or two days. Other antihistamines or analgesics (numbing creams) may also be effective and provide some relief.

Treating a Pinworm Infection Through Medication and Hygiene

The key to treating pinworms is to interrupt the worm's lifecycle. Pinworms are a hearty breed and difficult to kill. Over-the-counter and prescription drugs, combined with strict hygiene, are the most effective ways to get rid of this parasite.1

It's important to treat the entire household at the same time, even those persons who aren't infected. If you're pregnant or breast feeding, talk to your doctor before taking over-the-counter medication.

  1. Medication for the entire family. There are over-the-counter and prescription drugs available at the pharmacy: Pin-X and Reese's are just two examples of medicine with the active ingredient pyrantel pamoate. Pinworm drugs generally require a second dose two to three weeks after the first one.
  2. Bathe twice daily and change your underwear daily. Take a shower in the morning (showers are best because pinworms are immediately washed off the body and down the drain) and again in the evening before bed. Pay particular attention to the anal opening, using soap and allowing water to wash soap and pinworms away. Do not let children bathe together because of the risk of cross-contamination between them. Be sure to use fresh, clean bath cloths, towels, and underclothes. Wash used cloths and towels in very hot water with a good laundry soap.
  3. Clip fingernails short and practice strict hand washing. Keep yours and your children's nails short and wash hands using a nail brush every time you use the bathroom. Hand contamination is a key component of the pinworm lifecycle, so hand decontamination is a major part of treatment.
  4. Wash hands before every meal. You never know when you've contacted a contaminated surface. Do not break this rule. Always wash your hands before you eat and teach your children to do the same.
  5. Change and wash bedsheets every day for the first month. At night, the pinworm eggs that were deposited at the anus opening may spread to pajamas and bedsheets. Changing nightclothes every night and bedsheets every day is an important step in interrupting the pinworm lifecycle and preventing re-contamination. Use hot water. Pinworms are not easy to kill but hot water is the only confirmed way to get rid of them.
  6. Avoid shaking possibly contaminated bedsheets or clothing. This can cause pinworm eggs to fly into the air where they could be inhaled.
  7. Don't scratch! Nighttime is the worst. If your children are infected, you may want to cover their hands at night to prevent scratching in their sleep. The incessant itching can be maddening, but resist the urge to scratch. When you scratch, you're helping the pinworm complete its lifecycle. They get under the fingernails and spread to other surfaces from there. Also, scratching can cause a rupture in the pregnant female pinworm, causing her eggs to spill out and begin their lifecycle.
  8. Avoid nail-biting and thumb-sucking. This is difficult to do, especially if the infected person is a child, but try to encourage better hygiene habits.

Natural Remedies

These remedies have not been scientifically proven to treat pinworm infection; however, some people have found them to be effective. If you do opt to use a natural method, be sure you maintain excellent hygiene.

  1. Pumpkin seeds. Eat a handful of pumpkin seeds (shells and all) with each meal and in between meals. It will keep your bowel movements regular, flushing many pinworms out.4
  2. Diatomaceous earth (DE). This is another natural way to help regularize bowel movements. DE is said to be lethal to microscopic parasites but harmless to humans. Be sure to buy food grade diatomaceous earth.5 You can mix it into smoothies, applesauce, yogurt, etc. since it does not dissolve.
  3. Shredded raw carrots. According to HealthLine, it's thought that eating one cup of shredded raw carrots twice a day helps fight pinworms by promoting gut health and bowel movements.6
  4. Raw garlic. It is said that raw garlic kills the eggs of pinworms and prevents the females from laying more. You can either ingest the garlic by chopping it up and putting it on bread or in pasta, or you can eat the garlic clove whole. You can also make a salve by chopping up garlic, adding it to petroleum jelly or some other kind of oil and using a cotton swab to apply it to the anus at night.6

Cleaning Your Home

Even if the infection did not begin in your house, your home will be contaminated by the time you realize someone in the family is infected. You will need to clean all of the surfaces very thoroughly with good soap and hot water — paying special attention to any surfaces that a person might touch.

Peroxide and vinegar are a very effective method of sterilization.7 Spray undiluted peroxide on the surface, then spray undiluted white vinegar on it. Immediately wipe clean. This method has been proven to kill nearly all germs and bacteria. It's more effective than either peroxide or vinegar alone. And it's even safe for kitchen countertops.

In addition to washing surfaces with soap and hot water, use the peroxide and vinegar spray (before or after soap and water) to ensure a clean, sanitized surface. It doesn't matter whether peroxide or vinegar is sprayed first. Be sure to avoid mixing the two in the same container since that will create a different kind of acid that is stronger and potentially harmful.

When you first realize there's a pinworm infection:

  • Clean the entire home top to bottom including toilets, fixtures, counter tops, door knobs, light switches, and floors.
  • Clean the kitchen, bedrooms, and all of your children's toys with soap and hot water.

Daily for the first month of infection:

  • Change bed sheets every day.
  • Change into clean nightclothes every night.
  • Clean the children's toys every day.
  • Vacuum carpets and sofas daily.
  • It's probably a good idea to clean sink fixtures and counter tops daily as well, especially if you have small children who have not yet learned to wash their hands frequently.

After the first month, relax and return to weekly cleaning of your home and bedsheets.

Good luck getting rid of these pests!

Not telling on October 28, 2017:

If I were to have them which we thought we did as soon as you itch that means they are on your anus take a piece of toilet paper or qtip put rubbing alcohol on it , might sting for a minute but it will probably stop the baby's from climbing up your bum . Always wash hands take the rubbing alcohol or bleach wash the door knob and shower knobs don't forget your cellphone. Every time you go potty have a pile of paper towels near and rubbing alcohol and wipe seat inside and out.

Person on April 07, 2017:

Yes, they're really annoying. In fact I had 2 medicines that got rid of them but I keep forgetting to wash my hands which is kind of an issue. They keep coming back. When I first had them, I couldn't sleep at all! It was so annoying! So here's a scenario: I got my laptop in my bed and I was itching so badly! When I tried to sleep I couldn't! I had enough. Also here's a tip: Don't keep scratching your anus. I know it's very hard to ignore them. They're an nightmare! But the truth is if you keep scratched your anus you will peel and cut skin off... Which makes it 10x worse! I advise you to get the special medicine and take it, after a week they should be gone, and you can sleep peacefully. But once they're gone, remember to always wash your hands with soap properly and wash old clothing that you wore for the week. I've had the pin-worms/inch worms for 2 years now, but I got to say because it's the same thing, I just gave up. Now I ignore the itching. It's very hard too, but I ignore it while on the PC. What about going to sleep you ask? Well I found out, if you stay up late they eventually give up. And you can go to sleep. I might be getting medicine soon because I don't want severe infections.

I recently read a research paper on sterilization. If you need to sterilize surfaces, first spray undiluted peroxide on it, then spray undiluted vinegar on it. Then immediately wipe clean. This method has been proven to kill nearly all germs and bacteria. It's more effective than either peroxide or vinegar alone. And it's safe for kitchen countertops. I use this method during my weekly house cleaning to sterilize door knobs, faucet handles, toilet handles, and light switches in the bathrooms and, occasionally, my kitchen countertops and refrigerator interior. It is also a great method for sterilizing toys.

I realized i had these disgusting worms last night and can barely stay sane. Im not sure how long I've had them (im 13 btw) because when i was around the age of 6 or 7 we had a really close neighbor friend that had them. It hadn't started tickling and itching until last night when i first found one when I was using the bathroom. I think the cause of them was eating too much halloween candy because Halloween was only 3 or 4 days ago. But I am not posative that halloween was the cause because last night i could feel the female laying eggs and i do not know how long it takes for them worms to fertilize the eggs so they could lay them.

I have not told my mom yet because we just recently had our insurence cut off and can no longer pay for hospital bills and I do not want to worry her or have her buy me expensive medicine, but i have been reading the comments and everyone is saying that you should.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to tell her and for some medicines/home remedies that i can use that are inexpensive and easy to get. Pls help ❤

I'm 15 and I just got rid of them (with the help of my mom). If you eat sugary foods they will keep coming to you. You just have to keep healthy like washing hands alot, clipping your nails, taping your bum hole closed so the female worms can't get out and reproduce I your areas and get help from your doctor they be gone within a week or 2

. on August 07, 2015:

Just wash regularly and don't be lazy about it. Hygiene is an everyday thing so even if you scratch, go was your hands afterwards. And the tape seems like a good idea since the female won't escape easily so you can, lets say, poop her out. So just wash your hands people and clean your rear regularly when you have the chance.

After about a week after going to the bathroom, I rubbed extra hard on my anus and noticed a worm on the tissue paper. After flushing and washing my hands, I noticed it wasn't itching anymore. Each night when the itching started, I would go in the bathroom and keep wiping with the area until I got the worm. About two weeks later, I had no more itching. Years later I found out I had pinworms. CVS sells pinword medications. And good bowel movements help also

I took some toilet paper and plugged my butt with it, and the tickling and itching stopped (while I had the toilet paper in there). But when I woke up just about 30 minutes ago, I had forgot to put Vasiline(?) on the toipet paper, so my butthole was very dry and sore. Chaffed(?) I think it's called? Only going to do it when I get home from school around 2:30 because that's when the tickling and itching kinda begins. And recently, there has been a bit more worms than usual, and I don't quit unerstan why. More have been bothering me only recently, so I really want to get rid of them fast. For now, I'll plug my butt (and make sure to us Vasiline), wash my hands often and wipe any doorknobs I touch if I haf put my hands in mypants without washing. I also need to wipe the computer down, and do my laundry to make sure thre aren't eggs on them.

I went through the hell of pinworms., at certain point I thought I will have to live with those little mother flowers for the rest of my life. Desperation made me go on line day after day for like a month! Until with a little from here and a little from there I found the cure. The battle is hard and I made the homework for you. Follow closely these steps and I GUARANTEE you will be free of pin(beep) in less than a month! Are you ready?

1.- Buy two bundles of the herb EPAZOTE (pronounces apasotte) at a Mexican store, separate it in six sub-bundles, boil 2 litter of water, once the water reaches the boil point add one small bundle and get the water out of the stove. You are gonna drink one glass of that tea first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a probiotic capsule and another glass of that tea before bed at night (don't worry it tastes like nothing) and eat natural yogurt with as little sugar as possible.

2.- buy an small bottle of garlic gel capsules (buy the low price ones) and a tube of Vaseline., every night you are gonna take a shower before bed and once you are out of the shower and dry out, make a mix in the palm of your hand (wear gloves) with a little Vaseline and the content of one garlic gel capsule and apply it to the anus, now cover your butt with a 7" pice of plastic wrap x the long of the tube (tape it to your gluteus with six pieces of surgical tape), this is to avoid pinworm eggs to spread all over your bed and you end ingesting them again, also the garlic is going to kill the eggs. In the morning put gloves on and remove the plastic wrap and clean your butt very very good, here comes the hard part. You need to keep yourself baselined up...if you know what I mean, to avoid stain your underwear you probably want to wear feminine absorbing towels so get yourself a pack.

3.- buy a bottle of disinfecting wet towels and disinfect every thing you touch in the morning, door knobs, toilet flush, kitchen utensils, etc. avoid swallowing the pinworm eggs again! and/or passing them out to the other members of the family.

4.- isolate yourself, don't let anybody to sleep on the same room with you and forget abut sex during the critical time!

5.- WASH YOUR HANDS ALL THE TIME ALL DAY!!!

6.- VERY IMPORTANT!!! STOP FEEDING THOSE SUCKERS! Cut as much as possible your consumption of sugar, sweat food and starches (chocolates, sugar in coffee, cookies, bred, sweet rolls, beagles, subway bred etc., get ready to lose a lot of weight. Don't worry, you'll gain it back. In stead eat as much green stuff as you can.

Do all that if you really want to get rid of pinworms in a month.

And if you have a hiatal hernia say good bye to it to as a bonus price for your "sugar sacrifice"

I have them and im 12 they often attack when ii am playing football so annoying help me

Kerri on January 03, 2014:

I got them when my period started (week ago) but I thought the itching was a reaction to the sanitry towels I was using (new ones). When I told my mam she gave me cream for yeast infection. I was putting the cream on today and I saw one wriggling on my finger. I wiped my finger and cleaned my hands. I don't know what to do now. I shower everyday and I just feel so upset. I live in my Dad's mostly and I don't think he'll clean everything or even take me seriously.

AJ on January 01, 2014:

I've had these stupid things years I'm a clean person well I have to be im 19! But I've had them on and off for about 8 years now! They're vile and so irritating but it's probably because I suck my thumb I need to stop :( everyone who has them stay strong it's not the end of the world and they can't do no damage there's people with worser things. Just go to your doctor and get some medication don't be embarrassed.

Diatomaceous earth food grade lives me with very severe liver damage. Stay away from it. See a doctor, strict hygiene, and good eating habit will help you stay pinworm free

Shanti on December 06, 2013:

Yes! After reading all these posts, from the last few years, I was surprised that nobody had mentioned diatomaceous earth! I hope everyone who commented here will get this crucial piece of info: diatomaceous earth (DE) kills parasites. Its natural, relatively cheap (order FOOD GRADE online or at the health food store), non chemical, totally safe for pregnant or nursing moms and kids. I am a nursing mom with three kids and the whole family's got the buggers (again)- I have tried just about everything in the past. Here is the new recipe (ONLY works with the DE):

-Shower first thing in the am

-wash everything, constantly (try that with no washer and drier in the house! Arg!)

- eat everything parasites hate (pumpkin seeds, raw carrots, pineapple, papaya, cloves, grapefruit seed extract, raw garlic, cayenne).

- take 1T diatomaceous earth (DE) daily in food or liquid or 1t for children (adult dose for teens). You can also sprinkle it in your underwear and on your anus to make it unpleasant/lethal for them to come out at all.

-wear tight fitting boxer-briefs to bed

-garlic clove scratched up with Vaseline on it inserted into bum night and day

-Stay hydrated (8 cups water a day, minimum)

-no white flour or white sugar

-whatever helps you poop a lot

And to all the kids and teens who are dealing with this- I feel you, I had them when I was young too! Actually 40-80% of kids have them- which basically means most everyone at school has them too, whether or not they know it. Telling your parents means they can help make sure your whole family is clean and clear, following same recipe for health, whether or not they feel symptoms! You have to take care of yourself, drink enough water, shower, short fingernails, etc to stay healthy around the other kids/teens.

Good luck all.

james on November 23, 2013:

If your pregnant then you will have to go the diatomaceous earth root.

Janey Hood from UK on November 18, 2013:

Aimee. Tetracycline worked for me. BUT more importantly you MUST talk to someone, if left, these critters can cause more problems and you are risking infecting other people which is a bit selfish, the whole family may need treating. Don't be embarrassed, it is very common and you will be doing everybody a favour by talking about it.

Aimee on November 17, 2013:

I'm 12 and i have had this parasite for years now i just don't want to tell anyone cause it will be embarrassing it hasn't been ichy until i got my new Pj's and i have been wearing them for 2 days has anyone got any good ideas on how to stop the scratching ???

Janey Hood from UK on November 05, 2013:

This laborious method and medication didn't work for me and my family, but a single dose of tetracycline did! Poof - gone!

maramerce from United States on August 26, 2013:

Wow. That's gross. I was just curious what this was so I clicked the article. I once read somewhere it's good to eat a 1/4 of papaya seeds mixed with a tablespoon of honey for 10 days to get rid of parasites in the intestines. I don't know if that goes for pinworms or not. They also have papaya seed extract pills you can take as supplements that can help you keep parasites at bay. I've heard that if you have digestive problems, taking these for awhile could help since parasites in the intestinal tract are a common issue most people have no idea about. Great hub though. Obviously very informative and useful.

who knows on December 17, 2012:

put vasoline on your but

Jill on December 07, 2012:

I got rid of them! And I never went to the doctor. First, here's what I tried that didn't work:

-eating a ton of pineapple

-Vodka butt plugs

-hand sanitizer on the anus

-vaseline on and around the anus

-Pin X every 2 weeks along with cleaning sheets and towels after each use and loads of handwashing and vaccuuming and sanitizing

What DID work:

What we have to realize is, Pin X and Vermox, etc. only kill the hatched worms. They don't kill the eggs. Pin X would take 3 days to work, and then the new eggs would hatch in another 3 days and I would be back to square one. This went on for over a month. Then I realized I don't eat a lot or drink enough water, and so I rarely have a bowel movement. Unless I cleaned my intestines, I wasn't going to ever get rid of all the eggs in there. Here's my step by step to success, and they have been gone now over 3 weeks!

1. One adult dose of the Pin X I got from CVS Pharmacy. It makes you sick as hell so take it right before you are going to sleep.

2. I doubled up on Colonix Intestinal Cleaner from Dr. Natura which I got online, but you can use any fiberlike powder you mix with juice from a Wal Mart or CVS type store. Any colon cleanse type product. And they are all natural. Or double up on fiber pills, laxatives, anything that will clean you out. If it's not all natural though, you might not want to double up.

3. I put vaseline around my anus every night I could still feel activity, it does help the eggs from spreading around your house because they get stuck in the vaseline.

4. Get your colon cleansed (a colonic).

I had to repeat these 4 steps twice, so my advice is, repeat them once a week, as many times as necessary to get rid of these aweful creepy crawlies. But I promise you this, cleaning your intestines of the eggs WILL WORK!! GOOD LUCK! It's a wonderful feeling to be worm free again!

We got over the counter medicine and after 2 weeks they were gone. No one knew aboit it except 4 my mom and me so if you have it BELIEVE ME! Tell your mom or dad and they will support you and those pinworms will disappear as long as you keep up your hygene. Just tell your parents before you are in agony and pain and then your whole family gets it and you get embarrased ;D good luck ( p.s good over the counter medicine is reese's, thats what i used and it worked like a charm plus its cheap)

Kids.

TELL YOUR PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. It's their JOB to know what to do to help you and to take care of you.

2. If you knew how crazy/messy/personal giving birth to you was, you would understand, you have NO reason to be embarrassed to your mother. We wiped your butt for the first few years of your life. We can handle this.

3. Your parents LOVE YOU.

im 15 and i told my parents very first thing i did. and over all of the stuff they told me the one person that said something was my dad. he said drink or eat anything that makes you gassy, drop your pants spread your a$$ cheaks apart and fart like mad. he reckons it heats up your anus and then which such a forced blast of air it propels it out. so i tried it and it worked!!!! although im not 100% because i had tried the other stuff b ut the wierdest ones came from my grandparents one said shpove a cakew of soap up there and eat some!!!! and the other one said put a condom over a pencil and stick it right up there then seal it off with sello tape.... i tried that one i also tried soap. i prefered the condom you didn't feel it up there all day long

hope this helps anyone

can someone tell me what's the exact name of this tape to close my anus to suffocate this creature and where can i find it?i think that one works best.is it like i must spend 24hrs with the tape or there is a time when the worm moves towards the anus?

Tell them ! on April 19, 2012:

The best thing you can do is tell your parents. Better having a full Team up against these little bast@rds than one man. plus you wont be doing any of the insane amount of cleaning that is required in order to get rid of the eggs that move from your rectum onto underpants, sheets etc, your mom will. she wont hate you for having Pinworms, its is a very easy parasite to contract. Your parents will go on a full house lock down which will minimize reinfection by a considerable amount. i am 18 and i have Pinworms. trust me having more people help will be much much better.

They do itch like crazy, but when you poop A lot I guess it helps. You loose them pretty fast. Btw. I'm 13. What scares me the most, are the female worms migrating into the vagina. So yeah. You get them sometimes also when you eat too many sweets. One time I stayed up ALL night because of these stupid things. Idk why they were ever created.
